Rhodope
A Mountain Range Fifteen Photographers
Photobook
Fifteen photographers collaborated on the initiative of the Centre for Creative Photography of Thrace. A rare achievement in the country of divisions, rare even for this predominantly solitary practice.
It is well known among photographers that you cannot capture a place in a meaningful way if you only travel through it. For then, at best, you are photographing your journey, taking a random sampling of the moment you passed through. A place has duration, it has hidden places you can't see from the road, it has people you have to trust, local customs that vary from village to village, successions of seasons that take time/years to capture.
These images are not information, or not just information. They are each one separately, and even more so as a whole, the interpretation of a place close, familiar, beloved, which is not captured as graphic. The picturesque concerns the tourist, whereas here we are dealing with locals. But where this group work departs from the informational image is not so much when it looks at the landscape from afar, but when it enters - literally and figuratively - into it. It enters into an interpretation that varies morphologically due to the specificity of each group member, but is homogenized by the shared reflection. The images begin to transcend description, becoming entangled in branches, tucked under roots, stumbling over fallen logs. They are startled by a small burst of color, they speak to windswept trees struggling to stand. They begin to hear rustling, encounter ghosts in the mist, shadow themselves with eerie carcasses. The forest goes from enchanting to enchanted. And when it turns white and freezes in winter, the photographic wonders continue. The snowy images are perhaps the most striking achievement of this collection.
The creators Nikos Andreadakis, Stratos Vlasakidis, Giannis Gkogkos, Georgia Dimitriou, Nikos Zoakis, Sotiris Zoakis, Giannis Kaltseras, Christos Maltezos, Michalis Boliakis, Giannis Boultadakis, Katerina Papapanagiotou, Anna Paraskefidou, Gioula Patsi, Aneza Spanopoulou, Symeon Chatzilidis, under the curatorship of Panos Kokkinias, expressed themselves artistically and captured the Rhodope mountain range of today with a contemporary view.
Exhibition
The Centre for Creative Photography of Thrace, operating as a nucleus of cultural activity in northern Greece, has been producing artistic work for the last fifteen years, with the aim of promoting, cultivating and developing art and in particular the art of photography. In this context, the photographic project "RODOPI" was implemented.
Fifteen photographers, members of the Centre, captured the mountain range of Rhodope in photographs. The themes of the exhibition "RΗODOPΕ" are wide-ranging, with the only limitation being the geographical location of the shots, which were taken within the boundaries of the Rhodope Mountains, in Greece and Bulgaria. The whole work is composed of landscapes, portraits, urban landscape, nature, livestock, customs, daily life, night, entertainment, etc.
The aim of the present project is to achieve the promotion of the natural wealth of the Rhodope Mountains, the sights and monuments, the culture, culture and anthropogeography of the Rhodope Mountains through the art of photography.
The photographic exhibition entitled "RΗODOPΕ" will be presented to the general public by travelling to all the capitals of the prefectures of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. More specifically, the photography exhibition will be presented in Samothrace, Alexandroupolis, Komotini, Xanthi, Kavala and Drama.
