Workshop “What’s Inside the Black Box?” in Soufli

With great success and enthusiastic participation, the educational photography workshop “What’s Inside the Black Box?” took place on Sunday, 8 February 2026, at Archontiko Brika (Brika Mansion) in Soufli. The workshop was delivered by the Center for Creative Photography of Thrace in collaboration with the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation (PIOP).
The activity brought photography closer to children—from the “raw material” of the image, light, to the moment it transforms into creation. Through an experiential, playful approach, the young participants explored fundamental principles of photography and discovered that, before any technology, the same magic remains: observation, patience, and a creative eye.
At the heart of the workshop was the construction and use of a pinhole camera—a simple camera that can be made from a box. The children experimented with how light “travels,” how an image is formed, and how small changes in the construction can affect the final result. The creative process became a lived experience: with hands-on making, careful looking, questions—and plenty of smiles.
The children’s response was outstanding. With energy and genuine curiosity, they engaged actively at every stage, testing, observing, discussing, and collaborating. The workshop became a small “journey” into the essence of photography: that an image is not only the result of pressing a button, but of an idea, a process, and a relationship with light.
We warmly thank the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation (PIOP) for the collaboration, the hosting venue for its support, and all participants who brought the activity to life with their presence and enthusiasm.
The Center for Creative Photography of Thrace continues to design initiatives that make photography accessible, creative, and meaningful for children and young people—strengthening experiential learning and artistic expression.
